VH1 Storytellers - Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson
I listened to "VH1 Storytellers - Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson" on the ride in this morning. Let me tell you, I had forgotten how fantastic this is - I had a smile on my face most of the ride in. The intros between the songs really add to it. No time to write more, but I highly recommend you check this out, even if you're not a Johnny and Willie fan...

It still lives!
"Tear off your Appleseed patch!" my friend Stewart emailed. I had just informed him that I had missed a good shot at the woodchuck from my porch window. I had misjudged the distance and aimed high, resulting in the rodent escaping to the tall grass, none the worsefor wear and much wiser.
I replanted the garden last weekend, but he's already gotten back into it and eaten some of the new plants. I've set the Have-A-Heart trap, we'll see if he falls for that. Shooting him might be hard now, because whenever he sees the slightest movement from my porch he scampers for safety.
The past few years the garden did poorly for a variety of reasons. This was looking like a perfect growing year. But not if a rodent is going to destroy it. I've got to get this evil furball...

The woodchuck lives!
Just like the gopher in "Caddyshack" the woodchuck managed to elude me yesterday. Although I saw him many times, he never got close enough for me to take a shot. One thing I did learn however, my house that is about a mile for downtown Manchester has a lot of widlife in the backyard. Throughout the course of the day I saw: multiple birds - including a cool northern flicker, the infamous woodchuck, a deer, and a skunk.
My wife wants a lesson in how to work the big spring-power pellet gun. I think she's going to try to execute the little rodent before me. Hey, as long as it dies I don't care who pulls the trigger. Of course, I'll probably need to reward her with a romantic evening out and then I'll have to hear about her making the kill for the rest of my life...

"Shoot the woodchuck"
My eight year old daughter has been telling me to "Shoot the woodchuck" that lives in our backyard. She's trying to grow a prized cabbage as part of a Burpee seeds contest, and she didn't want to take any chances that it would get eaten.
Like a bleading-heart soft-headed moron (which I am NOT) I decided that we shouldn't judge the woodchuck until we actually knew what its intentions were. Afterall, the garden is fenced in, and there's plenty of greenery out back to keep a woodchuck happy without it having to eat from our small plot.
Well, soft-headed thinking like that ends with coming home to find most of the garden devasted. The cabbage has been mostly eaten, the butternut looks dead, the snap peas are gone, and the cukes have been seriously hurt. Apparently it's had no problem going under or over the fence.
So now the woodchuck is going to die, and hopefully sooner rather than later. I'm working from home today and from the vantage point of my home office I could see him in my neighbors yard this morning. I didn't dare run over there with my pellet gun without asking my neighbor's permission, so I let him pass. But I did open a window that looks out at our garden and I've got the .22 pellet gun loaded and ready.
A short time ago I walked up to the window and there he was approaching the garden, but he saw me before I saw him and he made a beeline for the weeds. From now on I'll employ stealth methods. Soon I hope to have a picture of his lifeless carcass available to post here... The only good woodchuck is a dead woodchuck (at least as far as my backyard is concerned).

Big fishing weekend
I'm heading out this evening to Martha's Vineyard. A friend has chartered for half-days on Saturday and Sunday to fish for stripers and blues. Should be great! Hopefully I'll have some pictures to post.

Signed up for Porcfest 2010
If you hadn't heard, New Hamsphire is the home of the Free State Project - a group of Liberty minded individuals from across the country have agreed to move to this great state to promote the ideals of Liberty. The thinking is that in a smallish state like New Hampshire that is already libertarian-leaning a group of people voting as a block can have a good opportunity to influence politics.
The ideals of the Free State Project (FSP) revolve around less government and greater freedom and personal responsibility. Ideals which I happen to subscribe to. And the best part for me is that I already live here, so I don't have to move to be involved.
At the end of June the FSP is holding their big annual get-together called Porcfest. It's short for Porcupine Festival, which is a take-off from their "Don't Tread On Me" Gadsden flags that feature a porcupine instead of a snake. The gathering is June 24 - 27 at Roger's Campground in Lancaster, NH. I just made my reservation at the campground and purchased my ticket for Porcfest. I also bought a ticket to be a diner at the 'One Pot Cook-off', which is contest throughout the campground to see who can prepare the best one pot meal.
So, if you have any interest at all in the causes of Liberty and Freedom get your camping gear together and get up to Porcfest at Roger's Campground in Lancaster, NH.
